Are Low Level Lasers Safe?
Low Level Laser Therapy has been proven completely safe in over 4000
worldwide studies. When Low Level Lasers are used correctly, they are
very safe. The most important safety regulation is to avoid pointing a
laser at the eye. Stimulating lasers have a particularly powerful beam and
can cause harm to the retina with prolonged exposure. The infrared
spectrum is invisible to the eye; consequently it does not initiate an eye
reflex response. Do not point lasers directly at an open eye, or over an

suffering from chronic low back pain. Treatment was effective in 71% of the

• Rheumatism/Osteoarthritis – Palmgren conducted a controlled doubleblind study on 35 patients with rheumatoid arthritis of the hand. In the

• Wound Healing – Palmgren investigated the effect of Low Level Laser

• Bacterial Infection – In research led by Michael Hamblin of Mass. Gen.
Hospital and Harvard Medical School, mice with surgically induced wounds
were dosed with bioluminescent bacteria to create potentially lethal infections.
Utilizing a 665 nm laser diode photodynamic therapy (Low Level Laser Therapy)
the researchers found that "infected wounds healed significantly faster with the
PDT method. PDT shows promise as a topical antimicrobial alternative that may
work even faster than antibiotics." The Journal of Infectious Diseases, June 1,

• Allergic Rhinitis – Neuman & Finkelstein studied 50 patients in a doubleblind randomized study. Following treatment with a 660 nm red laser, 72% of
the treatment group reported improvement of symptoms as compared to 24%

• Blood Pressure – Umeda tested the effects of a Low Level Laser on the
control of blood pressure via energy administered via the medulla oblongata.

How Does Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

According to Low Level Laser Therapy by Jan Turner & Lars Hode (Prima
Books), low level laser therapy -• Reduces pain by causing the production of natural pain killer endorphins.
• Reduces inflammation by suppressing inflammatory enzymes that create
swelling, redness, pain, and heat and enhances the release of antiinflammatory enzymes.
• Enhances lymphatic drainage, which increases circulation and speeds healing.
• Stimulates the release of helpful healing enzymes.
• Releases tight muscles (both smooth and striated) that create chronic pain,
joint problems, and decreased mobility.
• Speeds bone repair by stimulating fibroblastic and osteoblastic proliferation.
• LLLT in the correct frequency appears to be antiviral, antifungal, and
antiherpetic.
• Laser irradiation of tissue cultures has shown that units of light energy
(photons) are absorbed by enzymes, which react to light within the cell. Visible
red light is absorbed within the mitochondria and the infrared light is absorbed
at the cell membrane.
• In a mammalian cell, this results in a change in membrane permeability,
increased ATP levels and increased DNA production. The photons picked up by

FACT: Osmosis (transfer of essential nutrients) cannot occur across
the cellular membrane of a de-polarized (sick) cell. Consequently,
delayed healing, chronic dis-ease, scars, fatigue, and accelerated
aging is observed! LLLT reenergizes (re-polarizes) injured cell
membranes and increases the mitochondria energy by 150%, which
speeds and improves the healing process!
There are 75 Trillion Cells in a human body and they all need electrons to
communicate with each other. Laser light delivers required electrons and
photons (little energy packets) directly to the cells and enhances both their
ability to communicate with each other and their ability to produce ATP

In 1965 the Russians found that when they used a pulsed laser light, tissue would
heal rapidly. If they used a continuous beam, it sedated the cell and relieved the pain.
When a single frequency pulsed light hit the cell, it actually stimulated the cell to start
producing more protein than it normally does, and as a result, the cell would heal. Even
when they removed the light, the cell continued healing. The continuous beam had a
reverse effect. It actually caused the cell membrane to relax; it killed pain, reduced
inflammation and made muscle tissue relax. The Scalar Wave Laser has settings for
both kinds of light. Over the years researchers found that infrared, red, and violet
wavelengths were the fastest way to regenerate tissue. Recovery from injuries
went from ten days to two days!
In the mid-seventies, at the University of Chicago, researchers discovered that the
average wavelength of human cell tissue is between 600 and 720 nm; 660 is the midpoint. The Infrared (IR) wavelengths from 760-905 nm have been found to be
the deepest penetrating and have a most favorable effect on hard tissues such
as bones, tendons, ligaments, teeth and jaw. The Blue/Violet wavelengths
between 405-420 nm have been found to carry way more information than all
other wavelengths, and are favored for anti-aging as they increase the length
of the Telomerase enzymes and increase DNA sequencing among many other

Low Level Lasers with up to 500 milliwatts (mW) power output do not have a
thermal effect. This means they provoke no immediate visible skin reactions or

Photochemical Effect
In an effort to understand why the cold laser provides pain relief, reduction of
inflammation, increased circulation, tissue relaxation and relief of arthritis,
researchers have found various cellular changes that could account for these
remarkable healing benefits.
The laser energy is absorbed by metabolically active pigments of the
mitochondria in various cutaneous and subcutaneous layers of the skin: this
involves two enzymes of the oxidation chain, Cytochrome a/a3 and
Flavoprotein.

When the proper wavelengths are applied and absorbed, it is supposed that the
changes in the stereochemical conformation induced by an electro magnetic
field leads to an increase in activity and improves the concentration of ATP by
up to 200%. In addition, an increase in oxygen and glucose metabolism is
observed. A significant effect of LLLT is an optimized function of the Na-K
pump at the cell membrane, an increased protein synthesis (prostaglandin,
enzyme) and a significantly higher rate of mitosis.
Depending on which cells are being stimulated, the following physiological

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. “Although not as studied a clinical condition as
other pathologies, this landmark cold laser investigation occurred at the Flint,
Michigan GM plant when Anderson et al studied the effects of cold laser on
carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). In this particular study involving 119 subjects,
half received sham laser plus physical therapy while the treatment group
received real laser plus physical therapy.
“The results of this randomized, controlled and double blinded study were that
there was a statistically significant treatment effect shown by the real laser
group, furthermore, the authors stated that low level laser therapy
(strengthening, ROM etc.) improves functional measures of wrist-hand work
